What does your job involve?
My job is to provide support to client boards of directors and senior executives on technical and governance matters, maintain the board agenda and organise director and shareholder meetings. It’s a broad role and tasks can vary significantly, from working closely with the chairman to plan the corporate calendar, dealing with lawyers and investment advisers on transactions, and providing guidance on regulatory compliance and corporate best practice. I’m also responsible for overseeing and providing support to a growing corporate secretarial team, and contributing to the development of internal policies and procedures.
Combining an often complex client-facing role with providing direction to an enthusiastic team can prove challenging, but brings great variety and reward to the day-to-day working environment.
Why would you recommend a career at PraxisIFM?
When I joined PraxisIFM I was impressed by the strong entrepreneurial culture within the business, particularly the commitment from top level management to encouraging new ideas and the continued development of staff. Our open-plan environment involves staff of all levels and brings a diversity of experience which encourages the sharing of knowledge and nobody is ever too busy to take time out of their schedules to help others. Early on, this helped me to gain confidence in my role quickly and to understand how this interacted with other functions in the department.
PraxisIFM provided a flexible working environment and the support for me to study towards my professional qualifications, including allowing for time away from work to attend study sessions and taking leave to prepare for exams. This allowed me to complete the ICSA certificate and diploma qualifications, leading to completing the ICSA CSQS programme and achieving my professional qualification as a Chartered Secretary.
What's next for you?
Having joined financial services following a number of years in IT, I’d like to leverage the skills and experiences gained in this sector together with those from the field of governance as a resource to the group as it anticipates and responds to change, particularly from the digital environment.
In such a fast moving industry I believe it’s important to maintain a focus on continual improvement so more studying may be on the horizon, but until then the focus will be on building my industry and technical knowledge, and developing my ability to coach, lead and motivate others towards achieving their goals. It’s also quite exciting to be part of a fast growing company, particularly as we expand into new jurisdictions and seeing what new opportunities this may bring.
How do you like to spend your spare time?
I enjoy road cycling, playing squash (not very well!), personal fitness and generally anything to do with technology. I also act as secretary to a local charity with the aim of promoting accessibility for disadvantaged individuals in the Bailiwick community.
